In sports, failure is not just common, it's practically a guarantee. Think about Bryce Harper the other night rounding second when a catch is made at the wall and being thrown out at first base to end the game On national television in the playoffs. Or Dak Prescott throwing three interceptions in a big game, once again on national television, against the San Francisco 49ers. Every athlete experiences failure at some point. But here's the thing it's not a dead end. It's a stepping stone to the path to success. And how you respond to that failure is the key the ability to bounce back from failure, to persevere when things aren't going your way. That's what mental toughness is all about. It's not just about physical strength or skill. It's the mindset that sets the best athletes apart from the rest. It's about staying focused, maintaining a self-belief and learning from each and every setback.

When young athletes face failure, it's an opportunity for growth. It teaches them resilience, determination and the importance of working hard. It's in those moments of adversity that they discover what they're truly made of. That mental fortitude is what separates the good from the great. In the long run. Success is sweeter when you've tasted failure. It's those tough defeats that make the victories all the more fun.

Think about Michael Jordan, arguably one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He said at best, I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games, 26. 26 times he was trusted to make the game-winning shot and missed. He said I've failed over and over and over again in my life and that's why I succeed.

But how do we, as coaches, help young athletes build this mental toughness? It's about creating an environment where they feel safe to fail, where mistakes are seen as opportunities to learn and improve. It's about instilling a growth mindset, where they understand that failure is not a reflection of their worth, but a chance to become better. Remember this failure is not a setback. It's a setup for success. Teach your athletes to embrace it, learn from it and use it as fuel to drive them forward.
